Claire Gray Art

My Story

Art has always been part of me.

In my early years, I painted instinctively—drawn to expression, colour and feeling. But during my A-levels, that confidence was quietly shaped by expectations of doing things “properly,” and I stepped slightly away from that natural, free approach.

Over time, I found my way back—this time on my own terms.

Without rules. Without pressure. Just expression.

What emerged is the style I work in today—intuitive, expressive, and led by feeling rather than form.

What Drives My Work

My father, James Featherstone, was a natural artist. Creative, instinctive, quietly gifted—but life never gave him the space to fully explore it.

And he never painted me.

There are no portraits, no captured moments to return to. That absence has stayed with me, and it continues to shape the way I paint.

I began by painting those closest to me—friends and family—capturing them in moments that felt real and alive. Those pieces resonated and naturally led to commissions.

Today, my work is about capturing more than likeness.

It’s about movement.

Energy.

Essence.

The way someone feels, not just how they look.

Today

My paintings are created to bring emotion, warmth and connection into a space—pieces that feel personal, yet timeless.

Alongside my collections and private commissions, I also share this approach through self-expression workshops at Brooklands Barn—a space where others can experience the same freedom in their own creative process.

Because the moments we feel most…

are the ones worth holding onto.
